Built in 1994 to represent a typical county lawyer’s office around the turn of the 20th century, the office displays furniture and materials needed by a lawyer of that era. The bookcase holds a set of law books dating to the period of time when Iowa was a territory.
The building was constructed as a memorial to Winterset attorney, Chester R. Bentz, after his death in 1993. Born in Lucas County, Iowa, Bentz and his wife LaNelle (Michener) Bentz moved to Winterset where he became an attorney with the Flander and Casper Law Office. He was a Madison County Attorney, a member of the Iowa Bar Association and the Madison County Bar Association, and active with the social organizations including the American Legion and V.F.W. having served during World War II.
